The Numbering Scheme Explained:

2 .2 .6
^ major rev ^ branch ^ version

The major rev is bumped for highly significant events.
The branch is bumped for fairly major acrhitectural changes.
The version is bumped for each release along the branch.

FreeBSD has a history of releasing version .0 as the first in the branch,
and minor variations/fixes are released as .1, .2, etc. The next release
with changes is usually .5, and it follows from there.

IT's pretty organized except for the versions, they are either sequential
or bump to the next 5. :)
