No, I don't use right tools to read it (intentionally :-). I only use
ar(1) to pack the contents in some portable format, and then I read it
myself (not using ar).

Yep, that's also an option - I mean, to use -aout when packing. Anyway,
it was only a minor glitch... Thanks for comments.
