We have got to start reaching closure on things for the 3.0.0 release.
While this fix appears to be OK, we've had too many cases in the past
where things like this have screwed up other things.  There have been
way too many major changes in the last week or so.

Maybe we need to go into an immediate FREEZE where all changes MUST be
approved by jkh, or commit privs are suspended for a time...

I have half a dozen things in my personal tree I've specifically NOT
committed because they run the risk of breaking something and are
fairly minor bug fixes.
