One thing to keep in mind tho, is if your ISP's name server is really slow
you'll see a speed increase.  On the other hand, if the ISP's name server is
fast, you'll probably hurt yourself.

DNS only does lookups... so not that much of a difference. It doesn't
affect speed at all. Just the amount of time to resolve an ip.

Yes, a caching DNS server can run behind NAT.

It runs on port 53.
