If you have a CD-R(W), you may download a single file from

  ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/

and burn this onto a CD. (Your CD burning software should have some
option regarding burning a pre-built image file onto a disk.) This
will produce a CD equivalent to the first CD from the set you can buy
from freebsdmall.com.

If you don't have a CD-R(W), you have to download the entire contents
of a directory such as

  ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.1-RELEASE/

Then you can install from a DOS partition, if you like. This is
spelled out in the documentation at freebsd.org; this method works
fine... it's how I first installed FreeBSD 2.2.6. To download the
entire contents of this directory tree, I would advise you to get a
decent FTP client, rather than trying to select all the files
individually from, say, a web browser. Check the usual freeware sites
and you should find something.

Also, I understand that it's advisable to use a mirror site. You can
find a list of them at

  http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html

If you like FreeBSD, I'd advise you to just buy a CD and save
yourself the bandwidth/trouble. It's reasonably priced, and it
helps support a very worthwhile project. I personally am a poor
graduate student, and I can still afford a subscription. :)

  Lucas
