As you would have it, I made a (ahem) minor (ahem) change to
my kernel config file. Backing out the change let arlad's AFS
work again.

If I have time, I'll figure out which feature revealed the problem.

I would still like some suggestions for how to pursue a kernel
panic like this one, where the backtrace starts with a jump by
the kernel to 0x0.
