Just a thought--if it's booting from MD without problem, why don't you make 
an MD bootdisk (and copy the lilo.conf to it) and then try.  (And let me 
know how it works--at present, I use Linux's grub but there's one machine 
where I'd like to totally remove Linux if BSD's grub works without problems)
