if this stuff was handled by the ports.mk files a visual configuration
screen could come up if BATCH is not defined. this is especially useful
when dependencies with options get sucked into compilation... 

ah yes, when this feature would be enhanced a multi-package building
could easily be achieved (and the options of these packages preserved
for later update)
