Hi.

You may want to take a look at qmail + vpopmail + mysql.
Btw, pam_mysql works pretty well. You can use Mysql to authenticate samba,
ftp, email...etc users.Here is an example of how it works with proftpd:

AFAIR freebsddiary.org has a HowTo about samba+pam_mysql
