You missed the most important bit:

smartmontools@menelaos [12:11:18]> make
WARNING: ATAng is required to support monitoring of ATA devices,
ATAng is available in 5.1-CURRENT (__FreeBSD_version > 501105).

Hm, strange that it isn't a hard error...
