As I say, I have never tried to modify partitions on the root/boot disk currently being used. I suspect that, since the root partition of that disk is mounted, you will not be able to write in the label even for other not-currently mounted partitions on that disk. You may have to boot from some other device, either another disk or a live CD or fixit floppy in order to work on that particular disk label.
