libxml-2.7.6 released just today fixes the problem. See
    http://mail.gnome.org/archives/xml/2009-October/msg00014.html

therefore just upgrading from 2.7.5 to 2.7.6 may be also solution.

But I would to prefer both of these applied: restore historical
--with-threads (w/o argument) _and_ upgrade to libxml2-2.7.6 at once.
