For performance you might try:
$ /usr/libexec/phttpget
usage: phttpget server [file ...]

It is used in portsnap to speed up downloading by making use of http  
keepalive and http pipelining.
http://www.daemonology.net/phttpget/ (I don't know how up-to-date this  
page is in comparison with the version in base.)
