This is a known issue with MySQL where it eats itself alive.  You'll 
have to kill -9 it and repair your tables.  I believe you'll be able to 
prevent this by running with FreeBSD 5.3 (or a slightly more recent 
version of pthreads) or recompiling MySQL with linuxthreads.  -sc
