Your ISP could have an "inactivity timeout" for your account -- if
it doesn't see any traffic on the terminal, it logs you out.  One
way around this is to turn on the "hash marks" reporting in ftp.
This also is nice cuz it shows you that things are still chugging
along  :>  Or, you could periodically type a space followed by a
backspace.  Or, use ncftp, etc.

(this all assumes, of course, that your connection isn't
being dropped due to other reasons -- LOC, etc.)
