That'll only work, though if the X server installed with a variety of 
resolutions.  In the X world, the resolutions are a function of the X server, 
not the window manage, so Gnome vs. KDE doesn't really have anything to do 
with it.

If the ctl - alt - +  (and he really means the + sign on your keypad, not 
your keyboard here) thing fails, then probably your X server isn't configured 
to support that resolution, in which case you'l need to post some details of 
your config file and output from the X server when it starts up, and the like.
