The filesystem full message showed up while dumping core, not while
running the program. Just to double-check,I tried it on another machine:

socrates% df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ad0s1a 99183 45200 46049 50% /
/dev/ad0s1h 5216924 1491867 3307704 31% /home
/dev/ad0s1g 4065262 880635 2859407 24% /local
/dev/ad0s1e 1016303 159 934840 0% /tmp
/dev/ad0s1f 2032623 519345 1350669 28% /usr
procfs 4 4 0 100% /proc
linprocfs 4 4 0 100% /usr/compat/linux/proc

This time, same error and stack trace, but no filesystem full message
and a core file was successfully written. If it would help anyone for me
to gdb that core file, let me kno - I'll save it.
