I doubt that there's anything different.  I recently grabbed a 40G IDE
disk and it showed up as 31G until I removed the 4092 limit jumper.
The 4092 limit jumper is next to the Cable Select jumper and easily
confused with it.

Short of access to the systems, you ask a question that will be almost
impossible to answer.
