The number of times I see this in FreeBSD related fora is unreal. =46rom portupgrade(1): -a Do with all the installed packages. -r Act on all those packages depending on the given packages as well. -R Act on all those packages required by the given packages as well. Both -r and -R are utterly redundant when used with the -a flag.
