I have pretty much the same video card and  XFree 4.1.0 works fine for me.
I have created the config file with X -configure and added the following
lines to my XF86Config (in section "Monitor") to make it work:

HorizSync 30-100
VertRefresh 60-100

I can send my whole XF86Config if this doesn't help.
