Alternatively, he may be able to install an older pre-compiled
package.  I have a server running 4.x, and when I have needed to
install a port that would no longer compile on that platform, I
have used pkg_add to get a pre-compiled package from FreeBSD.org.
If he can do this, he might save some mucking about.
