Correct permissions?

Mine are:

bash-2.05a$ ls -l /dev/scanner
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  scanner  10 15 Mai  2001 /dev/scanner@ -> /dev/pass3
bash-2.05a$ ls -l /dev/pass3
crw-rw----  1 root  scanner   31,   3  2 Mai 00:55 /dev/pass3
bash-2.05a$ grep /etc/grou
group         group.bak     group.merged
bash-2.05a$ grep scanner /etc/group
scanner:*:70:coocoo
bash-2.05a$

So all members of the group scanner are allowed to use the scanner.
Could you please give the exact sane-command and error message?

Did you check, if your scanner is supported by sane?

Ciao
Siegbert
