I have a program to format and I'll work on getting it into 2.1

There must be something you can ask it to see if it is done
and then write a special Bernoulli format. How does it respond
to a Test Unit Ready while it is formatting?

I'll bet it is OK. I worked with multiple LUNs quite a bit with
1.1 and we ironed out a few problems and the LUN handling is done
at a level shared across the drivers.
