Actually, when I cross-compile, I do first  (usually in the xterm window,
in order to not break general environment): 

setenv PATH /compat/linux/bin:/compat/linux/usr/bin:/$PATH

(thus when make, gcc, as, ld and so on are called - they'll be _Linux_
ones), and then compilation goes on smoothly.
