I had a similar experience with this same card, where it worked fine 
on Windows and maybe even Linux, but not OOTB with FreeBSD.  
Our solution on this was to disable Plug and Play in the BIOS, 
which was taking resources away from the card.  (We were using a 
Fujitsu Lifebook.)  Other advice we got from the list suggested we 
may be able to get a DOS utility from 3Com to write out some 
different defaults for that card, but disabling PnP fixed it first.
