I just checked both disc1.iso (which memstick.img comes from) and
bootonly.iso (which mini-memstick.img comes from), and in both cases,
/boot/kernel/mrsas.ko does exist in the r270981 build.

Hopefully Mark can provide some insight. I do not have access to this
controller to be able to diagnose this further.
