Nothing obvious seems wrong to me.
I've seem hangs with ata disks that were accelerated by softupdates
but its been >9 months since.
If you don't hear from anyone else, try the following:
-Download a snapshot from releng4.freebsd.org and work with a generic
kernel.
-Find a trigger that hangs the machine,
-Try it with and without softupdates for every disk. Remove the
ata-slave disk and repeat.

	Good luck,
