(Note that I realise that you had the conditional attached as a 
prerequistite to not being killed for committing this, but still...)

Making it conditional makes it exponentially easier to screw up the 
world.  Since we have to live with this extra information attached to 
the proc struct if we're going to thread at all, we might as well live 
with the change now.

Shit happens.  The amount of heat that people get for breaking -current 
for a _few_minutes_ these days is a joke.  It's becoming quite 
impossible to present any work-in-progress without half a dozen old 
grandmothers screaming about how it should be optional and buried under 
conditionals and damn you for an ungrateful child for leaving the door 
open and letting the cold breeze in...
