I use htDig with good success on my lan. I use it to index all system documentation for all machines on the lan, several community interest sites on the net, and the freebsd site (for the most current info). I can search any or all of these sites click on a hit and link to it. It comes with simple but effective searchforms which you will almost certainly wish to modify. It isn't an Altavista or whatever, but it was used to search and index San Diego State U. I would say that focused indexing is it's strong point. The only other limitation I had to work around was that it only goes after http documents, so on my local machine I run Apache. But, that works out nicely since the entire lan is served.
