Well, normally, sysinstall exits and reboots the system.

This sounds like the installation failed.  You did select the 'upgrade'
and not 'install' opton, right?   

Try getting to the loader boot> prompt, then type 'ls' and post the
output.

You _MUST_ upgrade from the console from the 3.2-R boot floppies!
