Brandon,

This may be unrelated but a similar thing happened when I upgraded from
2.2.8 to 3.1.

I found that I had set "nisdomainname" to some value by mistake (ie. not
using NIS should have been ""), so the system ignored the passwd.master file
in similar circumstances.
