It was:

parish# pv -v | grep gettext
gettext-0.10.35             =   up-to-date
parish# 

Ah, just a thought, AFAIK gtk was installed when I was still running
3.4-STABLE, could it be that the port(s) need rebuilding now I'm on
4-STABLE?
