I solved the above problem. Thanks for all those responded. When I booted using a boot floppy, I have a chance to customise the kernel so the correct base address can be passed. I didn't get this chance if I booted from DOS though. Another problem I posed earlier is about booting win95, Linux and freebsd installed on 3 different disks.
