I was actually under the impression that the FreeBSD project took over
responsibility for those drivers?

I think Bruce was just waiting to find out what that bit does before
committing the patch.   At any rate, that patch has been a lifesaver for
me!  (Thanks Arjan!)  I've been using it in production for months now
without any problems.
