At a guess, you're running at 8 bits per pixel (total of 256 colours)
and have something on the root display which uses up most of them.  If
you start X without a backdrop, you should no longer have this
problem.

What are you using for the screen shots?  I use xv, and I haven't run
into this problem under those circumstances.
