I suspect that the reason it hasn't been retrofitted to 2.2 is because it's too much of a change. There was an attempt in April, but it didn't make it. Since everybody's working on 3.0-RELEASE at the moment, I don't suppose that will change for 2.2.7. That's a pity: as you can see, the difference is significant.
