The old ipop3d from washington.edu used to do this till he redid its algorythms - in older version it would try to read the entire inbox into ram - if the process isnt allowed that much ram it would crash. The new one reads as it needs and we no longer have that problem. So my guess is that it is trying to suck up more ram that your login.conf will allow it to.
