Have you tried booting up the stock SMP kernel?

Basically:
boot into safe mode or single user mode
cd /usr/src
make buildkernel KERNCONF=SMP
make installkernel KERNCONF=SMP
reboot

Assuming that you installed a "developer" version of FreeBSD (that
includes the source code).
