I remember asking you about this a long time back (July 2000) for
courier-imap, and your reply was something like that it looks like an
autoconf bug which should affect any autoconf-built package with
subdirectories, and that a workaround is to unset INSTALL and to install
with "gmake install INSTALL=$install_program"

You didn't mention what you did, but the problem disappeared with later
versions.  I can probably dig up the conversation if it'll help, or
provide configure output and config.log's for courier as built with
INSTALL set.
