Well, you can ``make install'' to do the copying etc :-)
Perhaps your modem isn't being very consistent (with the failure to 
ECHO).  Are you trying things like ``ATZ'' and ``ATE1'' after typing 
``term'' ?

Regarding the select() error, I'm not sure where this is coming from. 
What does ``pstat -T'' say when (or just before) you get the error ?  
Perhaps you're running out of system-wide open files ?
