It did take a few iterations of the IMPS[*] protocol to get things
summarized for the leap from 3.4 -> 4.0.  I had never intended
UPDATING for -stable users, but was quickly convinced of its need so I
put something there so that the "settlers" could learn from the
"pioneers" in doing these sorts of things.
