I don't think there's any standard at the moment pre 1.2. I tend to stuff
them all in to the JDK directory, say /u1/jdk1.1.6/lib, and then add them to
my CLASSPATH individually. This obviously isn't very good though.

How about standardizing on a /usr/local/lib/java? Or is this breaking a
rule? Then scripts designed to run the app can know to look for this path
for JAR files etc. The reason I often put them into the JDK directory is
because I know where the lib directory will be relative to the 'java'
executable, so I can reference it like `which java`/../lib/foo.jar.
