Donīt know, how much of the documentation you already read. What James
suggested has to be done as:

Copy the relevant lines from /etc/defaults/make.conf to /etc/make.conf and
change the value THERE. Never touch any files in /etc/default as they could
be overwritten during your next upgrade (and for some other reasons). Always
copy the lines to their /etc counterparts and change the values there.
