/stand/sysinstall will already have placed the kernel on the disk.  You
should not have to do it again.  If you can't boot it is because you are
giving the incorrect parameters to the boot prompt.

I am not sure from memory, but I think you boot the primary IDE using:

    0:wd(1,a)kernel
