I'll be taking a Network Appliance F720 file server out of service
within a few months, and will have a large bunch of 18GB and 36GB
fibre channel drives to play with.

I'm considering FreeBSD and Qlogic with vinum RAID, to get a few
more years out of these disks.

Does anyone have good/bad experience with FreeBSD/Qlogic, and
has anyone tried recycling netapp disks ? NetApp puts different
firmware on the disks, so I don't know whether they still work
like normal disks.
