I've had no horrible problems with a 3dlabs Permedia-2 based card.  I
had it in an MX5 for a week or so before I updated to a GL.  It was in
one of the 64-bit slots.

I haven't been able to get 3.9.x to work, but that is a different ball 
of wax.
