How did you install it? There's a few things that could have gone
wrong that might result in what you're seeing:

- You installed on a disk with an fdisk table (eg root is da0s1a and not da0a)
	-- You cannot use fdisk slices on alpha boot disks.

- You accidentally managed to install with i386 and not alpha
	distribution sets --- there are separate CDs for x86 and alpha

- Your loader got clobbered or otherwise corrupted.

The easiest thing to try is copying the /boot/loader file from the
boot floppy into /boot/loader in your root partition.
