You can. Read the ata man page (on the web site, if you have to): The
hw.atamodes sysctl lets you set dma or pio mode for each individual
device:

	sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio,pio,pio,pio

will turn them on for master and slave on both primary and secondary
controllers (though it's not clear that that will work if there is no
device attached at that point).

If you can get to the point of launching the emergency holographic
shell, you *ought* to be able to turn that on, and continue with the
install.
