Other than some MASTER_SITE* vars there is only
CFLAGS= -pipe
NOPROFILE=      true
COPTFLAGS= -pipe
USA_RESIDENT=           NO
in /etc/make.conf. Could something of these harm in such a way?

I am now trying to recompile with no /etc/make.conf (and newest
sources). Let's see.
