My preference would have been to make the socket structures simply be
a part of the PCB structures, thus allocating everything in one swell
foop.  However, I was not able to convince myself that one or the

This is called `maxsockets', and is currently defined to be the
maximum of `maxfiles' and `nmbclusters'.  Suggestions for a better
value would be appreciated.
